Overview

The first school in Singapore to provide a full-fledged bag design & production course with industrial standard facilities and studio environment. The Diploma in Bag Design and Product Development is an exciting design and production course that will encompass everything you need to know to start or supplement a business in bag design. 

You will be starting with the fundamentals of materials, learning about the different types of leather and alternatives, their uses and how to select them. After which, you will gain an understanding of the basic components and production methodology of common bag styles. You will be put under the guidance of expert trainers, where you will be shown and guided through the creation of a range of bag styles from small leather goods (wallets) to briefcases, totes & handbags. 

Finally, you will stay up to date in digital marketing trends as you learn how to setup an e-commerce store and use search engine optimization techniques to promote your brand & expand your customer reach.

This course uses a Virtual Fit Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create bag design samples virtually. This software enables you to make quick changes and modifications to design, material and colour with ease and see it rendered in full 3-Dimension. The benefit of this software is to cut down your production costs as sampling different bags designs and sizes can be completely done virtually. A classic and casual bag style, the hobo bag is a casual bag shape that is young and timeless. Historically made in the shape of a crescent with straps that accentuate a slouch when worn on shoulders. You will learn to draft a simple design with the given specifications and measurements. Duffle bags were historically popularized in the military as heavy materials were used to enable service men to carry their items easily in a barrel like bag with just 1 opening. But in contemporary times, duffle bags are a common bag style used in casual to formal settings with a variety of materials. This course will teach you to draft a barrel duffle, cut the appropriate material and stitch the bag with lining. This course will also cover the techniques of sewing zippers. While hand sketching can be a conceptual ideation process, digital sketching is all about finalizing your designs. You will learn to convert a hand drawing into a complete technical drawing with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software where you will be able to finalize the lines, add stitches and components with greater accuracy, make modifications to design, add texture and material details. Choosing the right material is crucial for structure and for the item to perform as intended. Drawing is an important part of the ideation process as you develop your designs. This course will teach you how to sketch out selected types of bags in proportion and detail including its components. At the same time, you will learn how to identify iconic bags and take key points of measurements which will enable you to develop your own bag designs from there. This module will cover all facets of branding ranging from definition, brand DNA, identity and an opportunity to study the success of exemplary bag brands. We will illustrate and understand the definition of consumer and what shapes their persona. This module will also give students a chance to conduct market research in the bags industry and interpret and analyze the data collected to understand trends and market positioning. Students will delve into the understanding of the role of a fashion buyer/ merchandiser in the bags industry. We will create a merchandising plan for a bags brand and conduct a quantitive and qualitative analysis on how to calculate OTB, with the goal to optimize profit.

Upon successful completion of relevant WSQ modules within the course, you will be awarded the Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) Statement of Attainment (SOA) by SkillsFuture Singapore. Upon successful completion of relevant non-WSQ modules within the programme, you will be awarded TaF.tc's Certificate of Completion.
