Intermediate Draping

On Campus Short Course Apparel Design and Product Development

In intermediate draping, you will learn how to use fabric as an experimental and expressive tool to produce design ideas. You will develop form and silhouette using different methods of draping including twisting, folding or pleating of the material. Conducted in a hands-on manner, the classes will involve working with fabric on a dress form allowing you to focus on building up ideas for shape and details.

Overview

In intermediate draping, you will learn how to use fabric as an experimental and expressive tool to produce design ideas through the exciting technique of Subtraction Cutting. 'Subtraction Cutting' is the name given to an experimental method of hollow construction developed by fashion designer and academic Julian Roberts, taught by him at universities worldwide since 1998. 'Subtraction Cutting' is an approach to fashion design that incorporates chance discovery, distance, and the ability to cut fast and inaccurately without too much reference to numbers, fractions or sizing scales. This pattern cutting technique known as ‘Subtraction Cutting’ makes the most of the negative spaces that can be opened up in fabric and falls somewhere between traditional pattern making and drape resulting in experimental garments that break the boundaries of the usual garment shapes. Conducted in a hands-on manner, the classes will involve working with fabric on a dress form allowing you to focus on building up ideas for shape and details.
