Fundamentals of Alteration Techniques (On-Campus)

Overview

The art of professional alteration can be said to encompass three main areas: Firstly, a firm understanding of the principles of garment fit evaluation; Secondly, using pinning to effectively communicate visual instructions to sewing technicians so that accurate alteration work may be carried out; and lastly, the application of proper methods of alteration to various garment types.

In this series, the 'Fundamentals of Alteration Techniques' will teach you the fundamentals of alteration through two key modules - 'WSQ Fit Evaluation and Pinning for Alteration' and 'WSQ Apply Basic Alteration Techniques'.

In the first module, you'll learn how to evaluate the fit of a garment and pin the garment correctly to indicate the necessary adjustments required or desired for alteration. By practising the correct pinning methods, it'll serve as visual instructions to sewing technicians for fuss-free and accurate alteration.

The second module in this series - 'WSQ Apply Basic Alteration Techniques' - will provide a broad-based knowledge of how to conduct basic alteration using various techniques. You will be able to apply the proper methods of alteration to the various types of a garment. This course is highly recommended for individuals involved in the fashion retail service sector and/or designers catering to the demands of customers who require clothing alterations or modifications to fit their body.

For the purposes of this introductory course, participants will be using existing ready-made clothing that they might have at home - particularly garments made out of lighter materials such cotton or linen. It is not recommended for participants to alter garments made out of heavier materials - such as denim.
