Overview

This course provides solid foundation of pattern development and garment construction of basic skirt and sleeveless top. You will learn to take body measurements, understand the relation of styles and ease allowance, develop patterns and basic sewing techniques to construct the garment. This forms the fundamental for progression enabling you to master the basic techniques of laying fabric, cutting, sewing, edging and finishing. This course is ideal for beginners who are interested in fashion design, as well as those who wish to enhance their skills in pattern development and garment construction. Objectives

Course Highlights:

  • Measurement Techniques: Learn how to take accurate body measurements and understand the importance of ease allowances in garment construction.
  • Pattern Development: Gain hands-on experience in developing patterns for basic skirts and sleeveless tops, which can be adapted to various styles.

Items Required For Class

Before your class begins, we'd like you to w that you have the following items so that the class can proceed smoothly.

The following items are compulsory for students to bring:

IMPORTANT NOTE: Fabric/Lining requirements are based on standard medium sizing. Please purchase additional yardage for larger sizes.
  • Fabric for the Blouse - 100% Cotton Poplin( 2.0 metres for 45"/114cm width )  
  • Fabric for the Skirt - 100% Cotton Twill ( 1.5 metres for 45"/114cm width).
    • We advise you to get fabrics that are not too soft and slippery.
    • Additionally, solid color fabric is highly recommended. Clearly mark which is the face and back of the fabric.
    • If you prefer to get prints, please get non-directional prints that can be cut in either direction. For example, if you get a dinosaur print, you must make sure the dinosaurs are looking in all different directions and not just one.
  • 1 spool of matching colour thread (100m to 250m, 100% polyester)
  • For sleeveless top - 1 mushroom or shank button (diameter 10mm)
  • For knee length skirt - 0.5 metre of non-woven fusible interlining/interfacing (Freudenberg AP68, 47g/m2)
  • For knee length skirt - 1 concealed zipper (length 23 cm, YKK only)
  • 5 metres of marker/drafting paper ( 45 gsm, 160cm width ).

Students are required to bring their Stationery too. The List of stationery has been stated below.

  3. 2B Pencil (and sharpener or extra lead depending on type of pencil used)
  4. Eraser/Rubber
  5. 1-inch paper masking tape
  6. Glue stick
  7. Notebook

All students who take TaF.tc's Sewing Courses are required to bring their own Sewing Toolkit and Drafting Paper for class.

Yes, you can! Our Basic and Drafting Sewing course is open to beginners. Just bring your enthusiasm along and have fun!

We highly discourage you from missing any classes since the entire program is designed to be hands-on intensive. Make sure you block off your time during your training with us or find an intake option that will ensure you do not miss any classes. You will only wish that you had more time in the class!

If you do not meet the 75% attendance requirement, you will not be eligible to sit for the assessment. As 90% of the total course fees are funded by the government, you will be liable to pay back to TaF.tc the amount that the government has subsidised if the student does not meet the 75% attendance requirement or attain a 'pass' grade for assessment.

No, you can't. Due to the intensive course content, you are required to follow this learning pathway: (1) Basic Drafting and Sewing (Sleeveless Top and Skirt); (2) Intermediate Drafting and Sewing (Shirt and Pants) OR (3) Pattern Drafting and Sewing- Dress; (3) Pattern Drafting and Sewing-Jacket As for Basic Alteration & Pinning for Alteration, these modules have no pre-requisites and are open to beginners.
